Mind Matters: The Body’s Response to Inhalants National Institute on Drug Abuse NIDA

An important implication of the present study extends to diagnostic nomenclature beyond adolescents. DSM-IV criteria mention a withdrawal syndrome that is unique to inhalant users 24–48 hours after cessation of use, a time period resembling the binge recovery period described by participants in this study (Section 4.0). However, in contrast to the conclusion drawn in the DSM-IV that a withdrawal syndrome does not occur related to inhalant use (p. 238), 11.1% of participants in this study reported experiencing withdrawal symptoms.

To ensure that it appropriately regulates flavors in cannabis inhalants, the Legislature should inhalants national institute on drug abuse nida consider specifying in state law prohibited flavors in cannabis inhalants. Solvents, aerosols, and gases are thought to generate their effects through the central nervous system whereas the effects of nitrites are primarily as smooth muscle relaxants and are most frequently used to enhance sexual experience (Balster, 1998; NIDA, 2000). Little research has been conducted to understand how the four types of inhalants differ in human subjective experience and addiction. Before such research can be conducted, sound assessments of each type of inhalant are needed.

In 2022 and 2023, most reported substance use among adolescents held steady at these lowered levels, with similar trends and some decreases in use in 2024. Despite being aware of these harmful outcomes, many people who use drugs continue to take them, which is the nature of addiction. As a person continues to use drugs, the brain adapts by reducing the ability of cells in the reward circuit to respond to it. This reduces the high that the person feels compared to the high they felt when first taking the drug—an effect known as tolerance.

Perhaps it is difficult to use inhalants frequently enough to experience DSM-IV defined dependence either for physical reasons or because more subjectively preferable substances are available. Clearly, a need exists for psychometrically sound assessments of clinically significant inhalant use. Moreover, the neurological and psychiatric symptomotology experienced from inhalant abuse may interfere with accurate assessments (e.g., poor memory of inhalant criteria due to neurotoxicity or depression). Hence, results of psychometric studies with other drugs cannot be assumed to generalize to inhalants-related diagnoses. Trends in prevalence and use are dissimilar to other substances (Johnston et al., 2006). Diagnosis of inhalant use or even abuse may be impossible without the self-report of the user, although practical, efficient use of blood assays may be available soon (Broussard, 2000; Broussard et al., 2001; Wasfi et al., 2004).

① DCC has access to detailed data only for the State of Maryland–which has a preapproval regulation similar to that of Oregon—and our data for the State of Oregon is limited. Drawing from Maryland Cannabis Administration’s (MCA) data, which receives approximately 200 label submissions monthly for review from its smaller licensee pool, California could anticipate upwards of 16,700 label-review submissions at comparable submission rates. Reviewing that volume of submissions would require substantial new staffing, risk lengthy delays, and potentially divert resources from other regulatory priorities.

As a result, we recommend that it specify guidelines by February 2026 regarding the escalation of compliance actions and, in doing so, specify the number of repeat offenses required before DCC issues a citation. DCC notes that it has already implemented strict ingredient controls designed to preserve the natural aroma and flavor of inhalable cannabis. Since November 2022, DCC regulations have further restricted terpenes in inhalable cannabis products to those naturally found in cannabis and contributing to its characteristic aroma and flavor.

  • Inhalants are often abused by young people due to their accessibility in household products.
  • If a licensee has violated regulations repeatedly, committed a violation that endangers public health, or otherwise egregiously violates regulations, DCC may issue more severe compliance actions.
  • Depressants are misused when they are taken in a way or dose that’s different than prescribed, taken without a prescription, or taken with other drugs to boost intoxicating effects.
  • However, some researchers consider MDMA to be a psychedelic drug because it can also mildly alter visual and time perception.
  • We found that the packaging for more than half of the cannabis products we reviewed on California retail licensee websites—the packaging for 23 of 40 cannabis products—was likely attractive to children.

This process requires laboratories that DCC licenses to test cannabis product samples for accurate amounts of cannabinoids and for a wide variety of other substances, including heavy metals and pesticides. The laboratory must report the results of its testing, along with an image of the packaging if the product is pre‑packaged, in a certificate of analysis. The laboratory must provide that certificate to DCC within one business day of completing the analysis.

Which risk and protective factors impact whether people use drugs or develop substance use disorders?

  • A ketamine derivative, esketamine, is approved by the FDA for treatment-resistant depression in adults.
  • To start, learn more about the effects of inhalant abuse and treatment options near you.
  • Since its inception, DCC has used both educational efforts and enforcement actions to prompt compliance with its regulations.
  • Another finding of this study was that, from a psychometric perspective, nomenclatures other than DSM-IV might better diagnose inhalant use-related pathology.

The Joint Legislative Audit Committee (Audit Committee) asked us to assess the process DCC uses to identify whether inhaled cannabis products comply with its regulations, particularly those relating to terpenes. Inhaled cannabis products include vapes, pre‑rolls, and flower, and are generally intended for human inhalation. A 2021 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study found that a substantial proportion of adolescent cannabis users are choosing flavored cannabis products.7 Adolescents who reported using flavored cannabis inhalants most commonly chose fruit flavors. In considering CDC’s research, we are concerned that added flavors could contribute to cannabis inhalants’ attractiveness to children. Licensees who do not participate in the packaging review process must use Oregon’s pre‑approved, plain packaging for their products.

How does methamphetamine make people feel?

It provided data from a large number of inhalant users compared to past research. Inhalants assessment was based on the SAM, which has well-documented psychometrics for other substances. For speculation about why dependence criteria and diagnoses were low, the item wording, format, and mode of administration could be eliminated as possible sources of unreliability. Alternative nomenclatures with good psychometrics were identified that may be useful in lieu of dependence diagnoses. Input from participants for the causes of discrepant time 1 and time 2 responses were obtained.

Heroin is an opioid drug made from morphine, a natural substance taken from the seed pod of the various opium poppy plants grown in Southeast and Southwest Asia, Mexico, and Columbia. Fentanyl can also be taken unknowingly when it is added to (or substituted for) other drugs. Withdrawal symptoms can include depression, tiredness, increased appetite, insomnia, slowed thinking and movement, and restlessness. Benzodiazepines are misused when they are taken in a way or dose that’s different than prescribed or taken without a prescription. Withdrawal symptoms can include nervousness, tremors, agitation, seizures, delirium, and psychosis.

Khat is a shrub grown in East Africa and southern Arabia that some people consume for its stimulant effects. Synthetic cannabinoids are a class of lab-made substances that are chemically similar to chemicals found in the cannabis plant, though they often produce stronger effects. But unlike most psychedelic or dissociative drugs that interact with serotonin receptors, it acts on a type of opioid receptors, called kappa opioid receptors. Also, illegal counterfeit pills, which are often made to resemble prescription medications, can contain deadly doses of fentanyl.
